Here I am, well over 40 and challenged to make appointments with people to talk. Yes, I must schedule talking with friends and family into my life or the day’s responsibilities overwhelm our mutual desire to NOT add more to schedules.
How did this happen?
For me the answer lies in one of the most overlooked benefits of attending a University. Yes, there are classes to attend, books to read, assignments to complete, social clubs to attend and parties to well, party. I’m not talking about the use of time but the freedom of time.
At a University, most people are actively working to better themeselves. The shared experience is acquiring skills needed to be on a path to a more satisfying life.
The freedom of time is experienced in the impromptu meetings scheduled, without having to schedule! Think about it, we’re in class and want to meet later and go party. It’s all figured out quickly: yay or nay. Schedules are flexible: there exist freedom of time..no pressure.
Contrast that to now. Meet someone in a social setting: let’s go party?
Let me check my organizer: tonight, no way … maybe next month on Tuesday between say 7:00 and 7:30. Let’s schedule, but I can’t commit until the Monday before, I’ll call. Seriously, and that’s adults scheduling time between their kids scheduled activities!
It happens.
I know in my own life I appreciated the freedom of time I had as a student. While it’s true you’ll never become a millionaire being a student, the freedom of time is priceless. The flexibility of moving between groups of people and being available….of being available: is priceless.
Reconnecting.
I started this blog entry as an encouragement for you to see what Seth Godin wrote in his blog on “Grad School for Unemployed College Students“
Seth is encouraging his readers to reconnect with what is possible given the freedom of time. It’s critical to recognize the gift that is present when there are few job/time commitments.
In fact, the goal of most who follow their heart as an entrepreneur is to gain ultimate control of time. I know my personal goal as an entrepreneur is to have the freedom of time in my day to do as I please and more importantly to control the luxury of my personal freedom.
