Your Graph Makes Perfect Sense!
An example of quality data presentation is with Hans Rosling on TED. Hans Rosling reminds us that numbers people are creative! It is interesting to work with numbers, especially large number sets. The beauty that Hans shares is revealed through the organization of numbers: clarity.
As a student of knowledge, I am often frustrated with how information is presented by teachers, authors and especially peer reviewed articles (i won’t even mention the recent MLM webinar presentations I’ve seen). Whether this occurs because of publisher deadlines, forced use of a certain textbook, or apathy for disinterested students: it just takes so much energy to learn under these conditions.
For years, it never really occurred to me that it wasn’t necessarily their fault. It was in some library years ago that I found the work of a Master: Edward Tufte http://www.edwardtufte.com.
Now Edward is a person that is truly inspired to educate through visual references. Edward, I think, really provides the answer for why it matters to work on how your data is presented: the beauty of clarity. Take a look at his work, it will inspire you to recognize the artistry of presentations.
